July 1-2

Math - Yesterday we worked on Math placements for our new summer school students and Unit pretests for the students that were with us on Monday. After the placement test, each student decides, with the help of their scores, which area to focus on during summer school: Whole numbers, Decimals, Fraction Concepts, Fractions, Geometry, Ratios, Measurement, or Algebra.
Today we had one more new student that is taking the placement test and everyone else is working on their individual unit of skill practice.

Reading/Literature - Yesterday we compared and contrasted legends and myths and viewed part of this  video:

We also read the story of Phaethon and Theseus. Today we will be reading the story of King Yu (a legend AND myth from ancient China).

Social Studies - Yesterday we didn't get time to work on Social Studies, but today we learned map skills. We took a look at the location of the World Cup in Brazil and some general facts about South America.

Every day we work at least a half an hour on Mobymax.com to build upon basic reading and math skills. The students are entered into a contest due Friday, July 11.

***Tomorrow we will do some hands-on science using Bernoulli's Law

Welcome to Summer School!

Today we took a math assessment that will help us individualize your student's 6 week summer school in the area of Whole Numbers, Decimals, Ratios, Fractions, Geometry, Measurement, and Pre-Algebra.

We also started a Literature Unit about Myths and Legends.

Finally, we will be using Mobymax.com and TenMarks.com during our computer lab time. Students will be provided with login and password information today (if all goes well in the computer lab). These programs are free and you many continue to use them during the whole summer!

Once again, welcome to Jr. High Summer School at St. Columba!
